Search for waterfalls near Tirunelveli and one name comes up first: Courtallam. It deserves its reputation, but it is far from the only option. Within about a two-hour drive there are falls at the edge of the Western Ghats forest, a dam with its own cascade and a few quieter forest falls, and the right choice depends on the month you visit and how much walking you want.

Courtallam: the falls one by one
Courtallam, also written Kutralam, is often called the Spa of South India because its falls run through forest on the Chittar river and are popular for bathing. It is about 60 km from Tirunelveli, and the town of Tenkasi is only a few kilometres away, which is where most of the hotels and buses are.
- Main Falls (Peraruvi): the largest and most visited, with a bathing area that gets very busy on weekends and holidays.
- Five Falls (Aintharuvi): the water splits into several streams, which is why it is a favourite for photos.
- Old Courtallam (Pazhaya Kutralam): generally calmer, a good option when the Main Falls are crowded.
- Tiger Falls (Puliyaruvi): a gentler fall that many families with children prefer.
- Small Falls (Chittaruvi): beside the Main Falls, with a softer flow.
- Orchard Falls (Pazhathotta Aruvi): set inside a fruit orchard, with separate access rules that can include permission or a fee. Ask locally before planning around it.
Do not miss the Kutralanathar Temple in the town. It is one of the five sabhas where Shiva is said to have performed the cosmic dance, and it is a Paadal Petra Sthalam, a temple praised in the Tevaram hymns. Many visitors stop here before or after the falls.

The best time to visit
The falls are fed by the southwest monsoon on the Western Ghats, so June to September is the main season and the water is at its fullest. The northeast monsoon in October and November can also bring good flow. Outside these months the falls can run thin, which is fine for a quiet visit but disappointing if you want to bathe.
Heavy rain in the hills changes things quickly. Authorities in Tenkasi district regularly stop bathing when the water rises, sometimes for several days, and reopen individual falls one at a time. Papanasam and Agasthiyar Falls
Papanasam is about 60 km from Tirunelveli, on the bank of the Thamirabarani. It has a dam, a hydroelectric station and the Agasthiyar Falls at the forest edge, and is also a pilgrimage spot linked to the sage Agasthiyar. New-moon days draw many devotees, so expect a crowd then.
Forest-side entry, timings and bathing rules at Papanasam are set by the authorities and can change with the season. Confirm them on the day, and keep to the marked areas.
Manimuthar Dam and Falls
Manimuthar Dam is about 45 km from Tirunelveli and roughly 16 km from Papanasam, which makes it the easiest add-on. The reservoir sits against the forested hills, and Manimuthar Falls lies a few kilometres beyond the dam, with a pool that many visitors enjoy when it is open.
Together with Papanasam, this makes a balanced full-day trip: forest scenery in the morning, the dam in the afternoon and back in Tirunelveli by evening.
Forest falls: Nambi Falls and Thalayanai
Further into the reserve are quieter falls such as Nambi Falls, near the Thirukkurungudi side, and Thalayanai, in the Kalakkad area. These are for travellers who prefer nature to crowds. They lie in forest land, so access, timings, the length of any walk and permission rules are set by the Forest Department and can change. Ask us before planning them, and expect an early start.
Thiruparappu on the Kanyakumari side

Safety and etiquette at waterfalls
- Bathe only where and when it is permitted. Never enter closed areas, even if others do.
- Stay out of the water when it is rising or muddy, and keep away from the edges above the falls.
- Keep children within arm’s reach. The rocks are slippery even in the shallows.
- Wear footwear with grip, and carry a change of clothes and a waterproof bag for phones and wallets.
- Do not litter. Plastic in forest streams is a real problem, so carry your rubbish out.
- Do not feed monkeys or leave food in view.
A sample Courtallam day
Most guests find this pace comfortable:
- Leave Tirunelveli by 6:30 or 7:00 am, so you reach Courtallam before the crowd.
- Bathe at the falls that are open, starting with the least crowded.
- Have lunch in Tenkasi or Courtallam, then visit the Kutralanathar Temple.
- Leave by mid-afternoon to be back in the city by early evening.
If you want more, add Tenkasi’s Kasi Viswanathar Temple, which is only a few kilometres from Courtallam.
Why go by cab
Courtallam and Papanasam are served by buses, but you then depend on their timetable, and returning after an evening rain can mean a long wait. With a cab, the driver waits while you bathe, drops you as close to the entrance as parking allows, and can change the order of the falls based on the crowd and the day’s status. On monsoon days that flexibility is the difference between a comfortable trip and a wasted one.
