Tirunelveli to Courtallam by cab
Courtallam is the most requested day trip from Tirunelveli. It lies about 60 km to the west, roughly 1.5 hours by car through Tenkasi, and most guests leave early in the morning and are back by evening. The falls are the reason to go, but the day only works if the timing suits the water, and that is where a driver who knows the route helps.
Bathing at Courtallam is opened and closed by the authorities according to the water level, so a fixed plan can fail on a rainy day. We book the car for the whole day and you decide on the morning which falls to visit. If the Main Falls are closed, your driver can start at another fall that is open.
Route and travel time
The usual route is the Tirunelveli to Tenkasi highway, then a short road to Courtallam. The distance is about 60 km, and the drive takes about 1.5 hours. A round trip is about 120 km.The best time to go is june to September, when the falls run strongest.
What to see in Courtallam
Main Falls (Peraruvi)
The largest and busiest, with the main bathing area. Expect a crowd on weekends and holidays.
Five Falls (Aintharuvi)
The water splits into several streams, which makes it the favourite for photographs.
Old Courtallam and Tiger Falls
Calmer than the Main Falls, and often easier with children.
Kutralanathar Temple
A Shiva temple in the town, counted as one of the five sabhas where Shiva is said to have danced.
Tenkasi
A few kilometres away, with the Kasi Viswanathar Temple and easy places for lunch.
Planning the day
- Leave Tirunelveli by 6:30 or 7:00 am so you reach the falls before the queues build.
- Bathe first and eat later. Keep the temple for the afternoon, when the water is crowded.
- Start back by mid-afternoon. Rain in the hills can slow the return drive.
Good to know before you go
- The main season is June to September. Bathing can be stopped without notice after heavy rain, so check the status on the morning you travel.
- Weekdays are much calmer than weekends and holidays.
- Carry a change of clothes, a waterproof bag for phones and footwear with grip.
- Orchard Falls has separate access rules. Ask locally before planning around it.

A sedan suits up to four guests. Families of six or seven usually choose an SUV such as an Innova, and larger groups a Tempo Traveller. Parking near the falls fills up on busy days, so a smaller vehicle can be easier at the weekend.
