Tirunelveli to Tiruchendur by cab
Tiruchendur is one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan and the only one on the seashore, about 55 km east of Tirunelveli. It is one of the most booked temple trips from the city, and it is easy to see why: the road is straightforward, the drive takes about an hour, and the temple sits directly on the coast.
The visit itself is mostly about timing. Weekends, festival days and the Skanda Sashti season in October and November bring very large crowds, and the car is most useful when it drops you close to the entrance and waits, without you searching for a parking spot.

The usual route is the Tirunelveli to Tiruchendur road through the Thamirabarani valley. The distance is about 55 km, and the drive takes about 1 hour. A round trip is about 110 km.The best time to go is weekdays and early mornings, and away from festival dates.
What to see in Tiruchendur
Subramaniya Swamy Temple
The seashore temple, with a tall entrance tower. Queues depend on the day, and special-entry options exist at busy times.
The Thamirabarani valley
The Nava Tirupathi temples lie along the road, so a few of them fit into the drive back.
Manapad
A coastal village towards Kanyakumari with the Holy Cross Church, about 20 km from Tiruchendur.
Athankarai Pallivasal
A dargah on the coast road south of Tiruchendur, on the way towards Kanyakumari.
How to plan it
- Leave Tirunelveli by 6:00 am to reach before the day queues build.
- Take darshan first, then rest, eat and drive back through the valley temples.
- On festival days, book the car well in advance and allow far more time.
Good to know before you go
- Dress modestly and remove footwear before entering. Phone and camera rules apply inside.
- Crowds are heaviest on weekends and during Skanda Sashti. Expect slow traffic in the town then.
- Carry a small bag and keep valuables in the car.
