Tirunelveli to Kodaikanal by cab
Kodaikanal, the hill station in the Palani hills, is about 260 km from Tirunelveli. The drive takes five to six hours: a fast highway run to Madurai and Dindigul, then a winding ghat road that takes an hour or more on its own. It is the most requested hill-station trip from the city, and a night or two on the hill is the right way to do it.
The ghat road is the part that decides the comfort of the trip. It has hairpin bends, fog in the cooler months and heavy traffic at weekends, so it helps to have a driver who does it regularly and knows when to leave in the morning.

The usual route is the highway to Madurai and Dindigul, then the Kodaikanal ghat road. The distance is about 260 km, and the drive takes 5 to 6 hours including the ghat road. A round trip is about 520 km.The best time to go is october to February for clear, cool weather, and April to June for escaping the heat.

Kodai Lake
The star-shaped lake at the centre of town, where most visitors spend an evening.
Coaker’s Walk
A cliffside path with wide valley views, best early in the day before the mist rolls in.
Pillar Rocks and Guna Caves
Two well-known viewpoints in the forest, reached by short drives from town.
Berijam Lake
A quiet forest lake that needs a permit from the forest department, so ask before planning it.
Bryant Park
A botanical garden in the town, with flower displays that peak in the summer season.
Suggested plan
- Day 1: Leave Tirunelveli around 6:00 am, reach Kodaikanal by early afternoon and spend the evening at the lake.
- Day 2: See the viewpoints and Bryant Park, then start back by afternoon if you are leaving.
- Day 3: An extra day adds Berijam Lake and slower time in the town.
Good to know before you go
- Tamil Nadu has used an e-pass system for tourist vehicles going to Kodaikanal and Ooty, and court orders have set daily vehicle limits. The requirement has changed several times, so check the current status on the official portal, epass.tnega.org, before you travel.
- The hill road is busy at weekends and in the peak summer months. Book the car and the stay early.
- Mist and rain can cut visibility, so leave time in the morning for the ghat road.
- Toll and parking are paid by the customer.
Which car to book
A sedan works for a couple or a small family, but an SUV such as an Innova is more comfortable on the ghat road with luggage. Larger groups take a Tempo Traveller, and our drivers are used to hill roads.
