Tirunelveli to Palani by cab
Palani is one of the most visited Murugan temples in Tamil Nadu, with the Dandayuthapani Swamy Temple on a hill above the town. It is about 255 km from Tirunelveli, a drive of four and a half to five hours through Madurai and Dindigul.

The usual route is the national highway to Madurai and Dindigul, then the road to Palani. The distance is about 255 km, and the drive takes 4.5 to 5 hours. A round trip is about 510 km.The best time to go is weekdays, early morning, and outside festival seasons.

Dandayuthapani Temple
The hill-top temple. Devotees climb the steps, or take the winch or the rope car, depending on what is running.
Panchamirtham
The temple’s sweet offering, a well-known prasadam of the town.
Kodaikanal
About 65 km from Palani, which makes a hill-station stop easy to add.
Plan the trip
- Same day: leave by 2:00 to 3:00 am, take darshan in the morning and start back before noon.
- Overnight: reach Palani by evening, rest, and climb the hill early the next morning.
- With Kodaikanal: continue to the hill station and return via Madurai.
Good to know before you go
- Winch, rope car and queue systems vary by day. Check them on the temple’s official channels before you travel.
- Weekends and festival periods have very long queues.
- Dress modestly, carry a small bag and keep valuables in the car.
