Tirunelveli to Thiruparankundram by cab
Thiruparankundram is the first of the six abodes of Lord Murugan, a rock-cut temple at the foot of a hill just south of Madurai. It lies close to the national highway from Tirunelveli, about 160 km away, so it is the natural first stop on the way into Madurai.
That makes it the easiest of the Murugan temples to add to a Madurai trip. Many guests visit it in the morning, go on to the Meenakshi Temple and the city, and return the same evening or stay over.
Route and travel time
The usual route is the Tirunelveli to Madurai national highway, which passes close by. The distance is about 160 km, and the drive takes about 3 hours. A round trip is about 320 km.The best time to go is early morning, and the cooler months.

A cave-style temple cut into the hill, tied to the story of Murugan’s marriage.

The hill also holds other shrines, and is a place with more than one tradition. Be respectful and follow local guidance.
Madurai
The Meenakshi Amman Temple and the old city are a short drive further on.
Plan the day
- Leave Tirunelveli by 5:30 to 6:00 am, reach Thiruparankundram for the morning darshan and drive into Madurai.
- See the Meenakshi Temple before it closes for the afternoon.
- Return in the evening, or stay in Madurai and start back the next day.
Good to know before you go
- The temple closes for part of the afternoon. Confirm timings before you travel.
- Crowds build on weekends, festival days and during the annual Murugan festivals.
- Toll and parking are paid by the customer.
